The Department provides Occupational Health and Safety Engineering support services to the SNL/CA site and personnel. Support includes: radiation protection, industrial hygiene, chemical management, safety engineering and ergonomics.


Performs industrial hygiene assessments of worker exposures to chemical, physical, and biological, and ergonomic workplace hazards through appropriate workplace monitoring. Uses recognized methodologies, takes measurements, and collects workplace data through sampling, monitoring, measurement, and dosimetry. Performs hands-on training for industrial hygiene-related topics. Calculates occupational exposures for monitored workers and prepares technical reports using electronic recordkeeping systems. Teams with industrial hygienists to identify and assess the risk of worker injury and illness associated with workplace hazards.

Provides technical support associated with the anticipation, identification, evaluation, and control of potential workplace hazards and risks. Works in the field and in laboratories using area or personal breathing zone air monitoring methods, direct reading instrumentation, audio dosimetry equipment, sound level meters, instrument calibration techniques, and surface wipe sampling techniques to perform industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling, and dosimetry of workplace hazards and surface contamination. Provides confined space entry and respiratory protection training and performs respirator fit testing. May perform ergonomic evaluations and suggest corrective or preventive actions. Authors and distributes industrial hygiene exposure assessment and sampling reports using the Industrial Hygiene Program electronic recordkeeping system or other approved documentation systems. Assists Laser Safety Officer with laser safety program administration. Performs ventilation hood surveys and maintains databases for respiratory protection, industrial hygiene surveys, local ventilation hood inspections, instrument calibration, and hearing conservation.

Education, training, and field experience in the practice of occupational health and safety, as defined by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Working knowledge of the methods, procedures, equipment, and techniques used to collect and analyze samples for evaluation of hazards, including National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sampling and monitoring methods. Knowledge of OSHA’s Safety Standards for General Industry and Construction. Knowledge of the fundamental practice of comprehensive industrial hygiene. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate investigative and narrative reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to perform mathematical computations to calibrate instrumentation, assess quality control measures, perform fit testing, and calculate occupational exposure values. Ability to work with minimal oversight while performing primary job functions. Knowledge of Sandia National Laboratories requirements and industrial hygiene policies, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of the supporting fields of chemistry, biology, mathematic, and physics. Ability to use computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.



High School diploma or equivalent

Three years’ experience in Industrial Hygiene/Environmental Health and Safety Program environment Ability to qualify for respiratory protection

AA or AS in Environmental Health and Safety related field Current HAZWOPER Certification

Laser Safety Experience.


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.
