About the Talk

SB 553 was signed into law for 2023 and becomes effective on July 1, 2024.

It requires all employers (> 10 employees) to establish, implement and maintain an effective workplace violence prevention program (WVPP). The WVPP has many similar expectations of the IIP, and can be embedded within the IIPP.

Learning Outcomes

  1. All employees be educated, engaged and trained to understand the spectrum of the threat of violence to actual violence, including the steps to seek assistance and response appropriately.
  2. A written workplace violence prevention plan developed and accessible by July 1, 2024.
  3. Ability to file a temporary Restraining order. Allows for a collective bargaining representative (union) to seek a temporary restraining order (TRO) on behalf of an employee who has experienced a violent situation.
  4. Ability to track episodes via a log, and conduct post incident investigations.
